Calavera Series — No. 2

Cherubim is the second piece in the Calavera Series, exploring the unsettling beauty of the sacred through a contemporary interpretation of the celestial beings described in biblical tradition.

A cross motif runs throughout the piece, appearing most prominently as a tattoo worked directly into the silicone base mask and echoed in the hand-crafted leather harness and its sculptural backplate. The contrast between soft silicone, natural leather, and rigid sculptural elements gives the piece a distinctly ceremonial character — part relic, part vestment, part living artifact.

The silicone base is individually finished and detailed by hand, with the cross tattoo integrated into the surface as though it were part of the figure itself. The silicone is infused with a green phosphorescent glow, which can be charged by exposure to light and revealed in darkness — giving the piece an entirely different presence once the lights go down.

Over the silicone base sits a hand-formed thermoplastic outer skull shell, giving the mask its distinctive skeletal presence. Each tooth is individually placed, adding another layer of texture and character to the skull.

The leather harness is constructed to complement the mask rather than simply secure it, becoming an essential part of the overall silhouette and visual language. Its sculptural backplate continues the cross motif, tying the various elements of the piece together.
