VIRGIL

Virgil is a design built around the beauty of deterioration — an exploration of weathering, imperfection, and the way a handmade object develops character over time.

The piece begins with a silicone base mask finished in an off-white metallic tone, giving the surface a subtle aged quality. Over the silicone sits a removable plastic outer shell, formed from a different base sculpt than the outer shells used throughout much of the Morgue Studio collection. This alternate foundation gives Virgil a distinct silhouette and presence of its own.

The outer shell is finished with hand-applied resin and metal teeth, complemented by metal horns. The combination of rigid shell, exposed silicone, leather, and metal creates a deliberately worn, almost salvaged character.

Virgil’s weathering is particularly intentional. The surface is finished using unsealed metallic pigments and powder makeup, allowing the coloration to gradually fade and change through handling and wear. Rather than attempting to preserve a perfectly static finish, the design is meant to age with the mask — becoming softer, more faded, and increasingly weathered over time.

The harness combines leather with heavy-duty elastic, bringing together the structure and visual character of leatherwork with the flexibility of elastic. The result is a secure, wearable system that remains an integrated part of the design.

While each Virgil is built from the same overall design and materials, no two will weather exactly the same. Variations in pigment, marks, scratches, fading, and handling will give each individual piece its own character from the moment it leaves the studio.

Virgil is a mask designed not to remain pristine, but to become more interesting with age.
