Calavera Series — No. 3

Seraphim Alpha is the third piece in the Calavera Series, continuing Morgue Studio’s exploration of biblical angels through the language of sculptural horror, natural history, and wearable art.

The piece is built around a hand-finished silicone base mask, covered in layered metallic coloration inspired by the natural surfaces and iridescence found throughout the animal kingdom — particularly underwater species, reptiles, amphibians, and feathered creatures. The same visual language continues across the outer skull shell, creating a cohesive surface that shifts between organic and otherworldly depending on the light.

Beneath the shell, the silicone base features Aramaic biblical tattoos, applied directly to the silicone to give the markings the permanence and character of actual body art. The outer shell carries its own Aramaic inscriptions, creating two distinct layers of written symbolism revealed as the mask is viewed from different angles.

The outer shell is defined by a series of carved eyes, each positioned to reveal the tattooed eyes of the silicone mask beneath. The result is an unsettling layered effect — the eyes of the underlying figure remain visible through the skull, creating the impression of something alive beneath the shell.

The silicone itself contains a phosphorescent glow, charged by exposure to light and revealed in darkness. When illuminated, the glowing base shines through the carved openings of the outer shell, bringing the multiple eyes and metallic surfaces to life and transforming the character of the piece entirely.

Integrated throughout the outer shell is hand-applied featherwork, incorporated directly into the sculptural design. A separate removable feather plate can be repositioned across different areas of the mask, allowing the wearer to alter the silhouette and create multiple distinct presentations from the same piece.

Seraphim Alpha draws from the visual language of biblical angels while looking beyond traditional depictions of the celestial. Its metallic surfaces borrow from the strange colors found in nature, its layered eyes suggest something simultaneously beautiful and unsettling, and its combination of feathers, inscriptions, organic textures, and luminous silicone creates a figure that feels more discovered than designed.

A wearable sculpture built to change with its environment — equally at home under direct light, displayed as an art object, or glowing in darkness.
